Wilderness - an Adventure Destination
Wilderness stretches from the Kaaimans River to the end of the Goukamma Nature Reserve. The Wilderness area is renowned for its vast number of lagoons, natural lakes, wetlands, forests and mountains. The town overlooks the tranquil lagoon, known as Touw River Estuary. The Serpentine River meanders between the Touw River and the Island Lake. Rondevlei and Swartvlei are natural wetlands with an abundant birdlife.


Wilderness has a temperate climate which creates an outdoor style of living that draws visitors throughout the year. Rainfall occurs throughout the year, falling mostly at night. The long stretch of sandy white beaches is ideal for holiday-makers to enjoy fishing, swimming, surfing, sunbathing or simply have a leisurely stroll. .


The area is a mecca for water sport enthusiasts, fishermen and those who wanting to get their hearts racing. The Touw River offer popular canoeing routes which will take you through lush indigenous forests. Island Lake is renowned amongst fishermen for its black bass and blue kurper. Kaaimans Gorge is one of the popular abseiling attractions, boasting with two 45-metre drops alongside a stunning waterfall. Other activities in Wilderness include horse riding, mountain-biking, hiking and paragliding.


Most popular beaches for fishing, sunbathing, or a leisurely stroll are:Leentjiesklip, Kleinkrantz, The Boardwalk on 6th Avenue, Touw River mouth, The Fisherman’s walk on 8th Avenue

Visitors can enjoy dolphin and whale watching at Dolphin’s Point. Other lookout points are 6th Avenue and Flat Rock. Dolphins can be seen playing in the surf throughout the year. The best time for viewing whales, is between July and November when the Southern Right Whales migrate from the cold Antarctica to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.


Map-of-Africa is a view point with spectacular scenery. It overlooks forests, mountains and the Kaaimans River Valley. Wilderness National Park is a captivating world, offering scenic drives and views of historic cave shelters of ancient Khoi and San inhabitants.
