Little Brak River Garden Route South Africa

The small sea side town of Little Brak River (also known as Klein Brak River) derives its name from the brackish water of the Little Brak River, alongside which the town is situated. Little Brak River is located in the Garden Route - between the harbour town of Mossel Bay and the coastal village of Groot Brak, and is surrounded by a bird sanctuary.

Being surrounded by a bird sanctuary, the bird life in the area is varied and abundant, offering spectacular opportunities for bird watching. Birds including the African rail, African snipe, Cormorants, ducks, Grey Heron, Black-headed heron, Egrets, Little Bittern, Whiskered Tern and White winged tern have been viewed near the Klein Brak estuary.

The 20 kilometers of navigable Little Brak River, makes for a great boat and fresh water fishing, boating and canoeing. Elfgat (about 150m left of the Little Brak River mouth) is a popular seasonal fishing spot for Shad. Other popular fish varieties include Cob, Garrick (Leervis), Grunter and White Steenbras.

The pristine, sandy Little Brak beach is ideal for long beach walks. The beach is safe for swimming and an ideal, uncrowded spot for sun worshippers. The beach is also a great spot for rock angling and whales may be spotted during their migratory season from June to November each year. The Little Brak lagoon is a safe swimming spot, is within walking distance of most accommodation establishments and is ideal for watersport activities such as water skiing and canoeing.

Little Brak River offers a wide range of accommodation, with camp sites, caravan parks, guest houses, bed and breakfasts, self-catering establishment, lodges and holiday homes to choose from. Little Brak offers some eccletic culinary experiences: choose from “boere kitsch” cuisine, fresh wild oysters and fresh light meals and coffee from the local farm stall. Little Brak River also boasts a restaurant and wine cellar that has been listed amongst the top 100 in the county! Amenities include a petrol station, post office and mid-size franchised chain store.

Little Brak River has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cool winters, making it an ideal year-round leisure destination. Explore its village charm, hospitality, variety of seaside, lagoon and river activities and tranquil unspoilt environment, and stay a while.
