Glentana Garden Route South Africa

Sandy seaside bliss

Glentana - a holiday village located in the Garden Route in the Southern Cape - is situated almost halfway between George and Mossel Bay, just east of Great Brak River. The village is founded on an ancient river bed and is surrounded by steep cliffs, which shelter it from the wind.

The establishment of Glentana as a holiday resort was preceded by the running aground of a floating dock, destined for Durban, on 1 November 1902. The salvage operation attracted a great deal of interest in the Southern Cape, and spectators arriving from George, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn witnessed the process with interest. Following the salvage procedure, some equipment from the wreck was auctioned.

Attie Murray – a lawyer from Oudtshoorn attended the auction, and during a walk on the beach with his friend Ockert van der Westhuizen, remarked that the location would be ideal for a holiday home.  When Ockert van der Westhuizen and his wife returned from an extended holiday on the Glen Tanar estate in Scotland, they built their holiday home where Glentana is today, and named the cottage ‘Glentana’ to commemorate Glen Tanar. Friends of the Van der Westhuizens - the Murray family - followed suit, and the name of the area was firmly established as Glentana. The village to this day, remains a popular seaside holiday destination.

Glentana is renowned for its pristine stretches of sandy beaches and prolific Fynbos covered cliffs. The climate can be described as a Mediterranean Maritime climate, characterised by mild winters and moderately hot summers. Rains caused by the humid Indian Ocean winds, occur mostly in winter.

Accommodation in this charming coastal village include caravan and camp sites located 100 meters from the beach, guest houses, self-catering units and bed and breakfast establishments. The Glentana Beach Café is a family operated eatery situated on the Glentana main beach, and is the social hub of the village. It is a great venue with quality fare, and ideal for celebrating languid coastal sunsets.
