Attraction Name: Parkes Shop
CATEGORY:: Cultural Attractions
Type: Museum
Trading Hours: Mondays to Fridays: 9.00 a.m. to 4.00pm, Saturdays: 9.00 a.m. to 12.00pm
Description of Attraction: The Parkes Shop is a traditional wood-and-corrugated-iron building of the style that was common in South Africa the early part of the last century. It was used until 1972 as a supply store serving the workers at Parkes Sawmill, which was at that time situated in the centre of town. (The old mill was built in 1919, and repurposed as the Woodmill Lane shopping centre in 1990).

The Parkes Shop is now part of the Knysna Museum, and houses a display about the history of timber in Knysna - including information about the woodcutters, how the trees were felled, how the timber was transported, etc.

The Knysna Museum preserves and explores the history of the town, and also of the Knysna Lagoon and the Knysna Forests here in our corner of the Garden Route.

Timber and shipping are two of the museum’s important themes - but our community is a diverse one, of course, and this is reflected in the range of displays in the five buildings that make up the Knysna Museum.

The Knysna Museum is owned and managed by the Knysna Municipality.
