Type: Scenic Drives
About (Owner’s description): This hour long (or so) scenic drive (about a fifty kilometer round trip) is located north of Knynsa - between Diepwalle in the east and Gouna in the west. The route winds its way through mountains and verdant Diepwalle and Concordia indigenous forests, to the summit (493 m) - which provides a spectacular view of the forest-clad mountains. If you travel from the east, you will encounter the Gouna Pass which leads to the Gouna Forest Station where Kom se Pad starts, and ends. It is interesting to note that the Gouna Pass is also referred to as Kom se Pad Pass.

It is speculated that Kom se Pad is named for some noteworthy forester from a different time, and embodies some of the area’s colourful history. Daleen Matthee’s internationally famed novel “Circles in the Forest” (Kringe in die Bos) was inspired by the enchantment of the area.

The gravel road may be irregular with corrugations, but it is well maintained and you do not require a four-wheel drive to traverse the area. Along the drive you may pass a number of open or gated jeep tracks. Access to these tracks are restricted to State Forestry only, who own them.

There are toilets and drinking water available at the starting point of the Terblans Trail (6.5 kilometer circular trail) along the route – where there is also a picnic area The picnic site is known as “Grootdraai” or “Big Turn”) due it's location on a wide turn long the Kom se Pad route.

Small mountain streams abound in the area, and provide safe drinking water. A little distance down the road from the start of the Terblans Trail, the Outeniqua trail crosses over the road. The pass is a popular route for mountain bikers, so remain vigilant so as to ensure safety. In terms of wild life, antelopes and baboons may be spotted along the route, and Vervet monkeys can be seen clambering in the tree tops. Birds to look out for in the area are the Narina Trogon, Red-billed Wood Hoopoe, Olive Woodpecker, Black-headed Oriole and the Knynsa Turaco (Knynsa Loerie).
