Business name: The Groeneweide Forest Trail
CATEGORY:: Activities
Type: Day Hikes
About (Owner’s description): A beautiful forest hike just outside George on the Garden Route. The Groeneweide Forest is part of the larger Groenkop State Forest and the Groeneweide hiking trail traverses the 1 450-ha indigenous forest with its numerous streams.

The trail has three distances to choose from, Green - 9km, Blue - 11km and red - 13km Route. They form a set of loops which are interlinked. The trails are mostly forest single tracks and paths used by woodcutters. Setting off from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University campus (Saasveld) all the routes initially follow the same path.

The trails start with a gradual descent to the Kaaimans River before climbing to a path that offers spectacular views of towering Outeniqua Yellowwoods and Ironwoods. An enchanting pool in the Silver River is a highlight of the Red Route, which leads past a number of enormous Yellowwoods. Vegetation on the trail includes Palmiet, Outeniqua Yellowwood – of which there are some majestic specimens, Onderbos, Ironwood, Bastard Saffron wood, Stinkwood, fungi in different colours on felled wood and seven-week ferns.

Animals to look out for include blue duiker, bushbuck, vervet monkey, baboon, bushpig, leopard and caracal who are illusive and shy and rarely encountered. Among the many forest birds to keep an eye out for are Narina Trogan, Olive Thrush, Chorister, Cape and Starred Robins and the Knysna Loerie.

Parking is available at the back of the University building. Walk over the small Golf Course and take a self-issue permit at the starting point of the trail. There is a map on the back of the permit, but take a moment and have a look at the big map on the signboard before you start your hike. You will find clear markers along the trail, indicating direction and distance walked. There are some nice clean river streams along the way, but please take enough drinking water.

These trails can be done with families who have older children.

Situated along the old Knysna George road. Turn onto the Saasveld / Seven Passes road out of Courtney Road in George (At the Pine Lodge Conference Centre). Follow this road for 5km and turn left into Saasveld. Once you entered the campus follow the road until you reach the sports fields then turn right just before the sports field. The trail starts near the tree line on the left-hand side of the road after you pass the last sport field. You can park at the building on the right.
