About (Owner’s description): Goukamma Nature and Marine Reserve

Goukamma to Groenvlei Trail

The Goukamma Nature and Marine Reserve near Sedgefield conserve the Goukamma Estuary, a fourteen kilometre stretch of pristine beach, indigenous coastal forest, vegetated dunes and the Groenvlei Lake. The Groenvlei Lake is unique in that it is land locked and is the only freshwater lake in the lake system between Sedgefield and the Wilderness. The lake is replenished by rain water from the surrounding dunes.

The marine reserve – adjacent to the nature reserve – extends 1.8 kilometres seaward.

Description: The Goukamma to Groenvlei trail is an open ended trail, following the western bank of the Goukamma River for a short distance, and then descending into a valley between the dunes. From the information boards at the western end of the dune ridge, the trail crosses the dunes and passes through a Milkwood forest to reach a picnic table and benches – ideal for a picnic break. Further along, the trail veers to the north-west, passing through another lush Milkwood forest above Groenvlei, just before the end of the trail.

Distance: 16 kilometres

Duration: 4 to 5 hours

Difficulty: Moderate

Features: The Goukamma Nature Reserve’s lush vegetation is characterised by coastal dune forest, indigenous dune Fynbos and Milkwood forests. Bird life is prolific – with at least 220 species recorded – and includes: African marsh-harrier, African fish eagle, a wide variety of waterfowl, giant kingfisher, half collared kingfisher and African fin foot. The coastal area is also home to the black oyster catcher.

Animals one may encounter in the reserve include grysbok, bush pig, water- and grey mongoose, the Cape clawless otter, caracal and porcupine.

Permits: Permits are obtainable from Cape Nature and bookings may be made online at www.capenature.co.za. A Goukamma Nature and Marine reserve pamphlet indicating the various walks is available with trail bookings.

Facilities: The Mvbubu and Groenvlei bush camps are located on the shores of the Groenvlei lake and telephonic reservations may be made at + 27 44 802 5310. The Goukamma Nature and Marine reserve also offers charming picnic sites and activities which include swimming, sailing and canoeing on the Goukamma River. Sea- and river angling are popular, but are regulated and require permits.
