Business name: Diepwalle Forest Trail - Elephant Walk - Black
CATEGORY:: Activities
Type: Day Hikes
About (Owner’s description): The Diepwalle indigenous forest is located in the Knysna section of the Garden Route National Park and covers an area of 3 200 hectares. The Diepwalle Forest was once the last known refuge of the renowned and elusive Knysna elephants.

Initially numbering between 400 and 500 elephants in the 1800s, these elephants were pursued and hunted for their ivory tusks following the Millwood gold rush during the 1800s. So much so, that their numbers dwindled to a mere 50 in the early 1900s. As the elephant population declined, a census conducted in 1979 recorded only three elephants left in the forest. In September 2000, a young bull elephant created great excitement when it was spotted in the Gouna Forest and indicated the presence of elephants in the forest.

Crossing rivers and streams, the Elephant Walk leads through tracts of indigenous forest. The forest trail is characterised by moist, medium most and very wet forest environments. Trees in the moist forest environment reach heights between 15 and 30 metres. As such, this forest is referred to as the ‘high forest’. Indigenous forest and a variety of other species include Outeniqua Yellowwoods, Stinkwood, White Pear and Ironwood is spectacular features in this forest.

River valleys and ravines comprise the wet forest and vegetation includes the Red and White Alder, Stinkwood, Cape Holly and tree Fuschia.

The Diepwalle Forest trail network comprises three trails, which are colour coded: the red trail, white trail and black trail, ranging from 7 to 9 kilometres.

The black Elephant Walk is a self-guided trail and comprises:

Distance: 9 kilometres

Duration: 3 hours

Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Permits: Self-issue permits are available at the start of the trail and entry fees are payable when the access point is staffed. Maps for the Diepwalle Elephant Walk are available at the start of the trail.

Facilities: Charming picnic spots along the trail at Ysterhoutrug, Big Tree and Velbroekdraai, or alternatively follow the cycle route to the Garden of Eden.
