Business name: Cradock Pass Trail
CATEGORY:: Activities
Type: Day Hikes
About (Owner’s description): Built in 1812 The Cradock was the only pass at the time across the Outeniqua Mountains. The 5.5-mile route (10km) went almost directly over the mountain with no sharp bends or contour paths and was in use until 1847. Earlier travellers referred to the route as “only fit for baboons!’

This hike takes you along a historical journey where grooves gouged in the rock by ox wagon wheels, may still be seen.

The Cradock Pass Trail is an open-ended 12km trail, difficult and should take +- 6 hours. The trail starts at the Witfontein Forest Station and ends on the north side of the Montagu Pass (North Station an old hotel situated at the top of the Montagu Pass). You will need transport waiting here. Alternatively, it is 10km (3 hours walk) from here down the Montagu Pass and back to the start.

This historic trail offers beautiful and extensive mountain scenery, views over George, Swartberg mountains, coastline, birds and animals.

Note: This is a mountain trail and can be steep, slippery and overgrown in sections, precaution must be taken. The weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly, even if weather is good at lower altitudes. Plan your hike and be sure to take warm clothing, water and food.

Trails are free and self-issue permits are available from the Witfontein Forestry Station. Fill in the logbook and get a map for the trail. Parking is available at the office.

We ask that you please adhere to the rules of the reserve at all times and respect nature and others.

Directions: Follow the signposts for the N12 towards Oudtshoorn. Travel for 4km along this road, then turn right towards Witfontein and right again into the Outeniqua Nature Reserve.
